Never judge a book by its cover

Do you follow anyone online, who has brilliant free stuff and you love it? They’re so generous, and brilliant and awesome. Do you ever feel that you could help them with your expertise?

As a weight loss coach, there’s someone out there who is always complaining about her weight, though she says it doesn’t hold her back. It’s funny because although I’ve got my weight totally sorted, and I’m never EVER going to let myself get fat again, there are other areas of my life I need to work on. Do you have other areas of your life that you feel you could help others with, yet your weight is a sticking point? Notice how that makes you feel. Do you feel empowered?

No one has everything perfectly sorted in their lives. There’s a saying ‘there’s always someone worse off than you’. I used to say to myself that being my perfect weight was more important that having lots of friends, a great husband,  seeing the world, owning stuff, having a lovely home, car etc. Of course, when you’re young you want the world!

Someone quite close to me is incredibly wealthy. I remember hearing the story of him going into the Bentley showroom in London’s Park Lane to look at a car. He and his wife had been running and were wearing track suits and trainers. This was in the day where you really had to look the part for people to believe you could afford anything. The sales manager approached, looking down his nose, and begrudgingly showed them the car. He was extremely patronising, which reminds me of the sales assistant in Pretty Woman, when Julia Roberts was looking for a dress in Rodeo Drive. When they said, I’ll have it, and took out their cheque book and paid on the spot, the car salesman was utterly shocked. I love that story as it shows you can never judge a book by its cover. As Julia Roberts said, ‘Big mistake…huge!’

On the other hand, in parts of London and Dubai, (where I met my husband), it seems like every other person has a Louis Vuitton handbag. It used to be quite rare, and if you were lucky enough to own one, people did a double take, especially at the airport. In fact it was assumed that you would be travelling First or Business class if you had one. Now, it seems like it is more likely for people to be in Economy. Nowadays, people with wealth try to look anonymous, yet get double takes. The more you wish to be invisible the more you will be noticed.

Chocolate pancakes

Ingredients

3 tablespoons organic ground flaxseeds (grind in the coffee grinder until fluffy)

1 TBS Organic cacao powder or 1 TBS organic cocoa powder

1 TBS coconut oil (Tiana brand coconut butter is unscented) plus extra for greasing

1 egg (free range organic is recommended for high Omega 3 content)

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 TBS water

1-2 TBS Stevia (Truvia or supermarket own) or (Green) unprocessed stevia and honey

Method

Mix together the ground flaxseeds, cocoa powder, baking powder and vanilla extract  in a bowl with a whisk. Add the melted coconut oil. Beat in the egg and add the water until blended.

Grease a ceramic frying pan with a little coconut butter. (Teflon pans have a negative reputation for toxicity, and ceramic pan are altogether healthier.)

Add the gooey chocolate mixture to the pan. Make sure the oil is not too hot or smoking. If it is, throw it away and start again. (Trans fats formation.) Wait until bubbles form. Use a silicon fried egg slice to ease the bottom away from the pan. Do not rush, or it may fall apart. Gently ease the pancake onto the slice and turn over. You can try to ‘flip’ it, but beware, it may fall apart! Cook on the other side for another 30 seconds to a minute until it feels stable. Remove from the pan and place onto a heated plate.

Toppings to enjoy it with include shaved organic cacao butter, (Microplane graters are excellent) sesame seeds, toasted slivered almonds, some more stevia for added sweetness, maple syrup, cacao nibs, shaved dark Lindt chocolate …the possibilities are vast.

Enjoy. They are very filling so you may only need half.

 

Are counting calories essential for weight loss?

Calculate all those calories

Counting calories or points is the central theme to many group programmes such as slimming world or weight watchers. The problem starts when the weight is lost, and normal life returns. Are you really going to be able to sustain this for the rest of your life? Have you actually addressed the fundamental reasons why you put on so much weight in the first place?

Unfortunately all the people I coach have not had lasting success with calorie controlled diets. Diets are temporary, but weight loss coaching personally changes your whole approach over time, and gives long lasting results.

If you want to nourish your body, mind and spirit, you need to concentrate on the big picture. For example, coconut, coconut milk and avocados are calorie dense, but offer a lot of healthy fats which ensure you are not constantly hungry due to fluctuating blood sugar levels. We need protein for the feeling of satiety, and vegetables and certain fruits (some are much better choices than others) for their fibre, vitamin and mineral contents. You could live off beans and rice and overall probably have a low calorie intake, but where’s the joy in that?

You might be able to lose weight on your own, but since you haven’t before, I highly recommend you get the support you need with a personalised weight loss programme with lifelong results.

Listen to your hunger

It might sound really obvious, but when you are full up then stop eating. In today’s commercialised world we are bombarded with advertising messages with mostly unhealthy fast food and snacks. Our taste buds have a lot to answer for! (I remember when I was young and really overweight I used to wish I didn’t have taste buds as I blamed myself for my lack of self-control). Food companies spend a lot of money ensuring that their products contain the most alluring combinations of fats, sugars and salts to make them highly addictive. Sugar is known to cause our neurological pathways to change causing  addiction in the same way as cocaine.

One method of improving self control is by not having these unhealthy and even dangerous (trans fats are safe in zero quantities) food products in our homes. Crisps are not a healthy food because they contain oils that have been cooked at very high temperatures and contain hydrogenated or trans fats. These are damaging to our arteries – and cause internal cellular damage. Sugar is a big problem too. During a recent supermarket trip I couldn’t help but notice that those families with lots of fizzy drinks in their trolleys often had the largest waistlines, and overweight children.

If you are trying to lose weight, you do not want to feel deprived, (and my clients tell me that they do not feel deprived). However, some weeks the weight loss is static. My advice is to ensure that your plate contains at least half vegetables. Do a clever swap of a higher calorie and carb option of say pasta, potatoes or rice for starchy veggies. You will still feel satisfied, but naturally will eat significantly fewer calories.

If you slip up and occasionally need a treat, again, don’t fret. Life is unpredictable, and we can be put in to a situation where nothing else is available. Enjoy the treat and move on.

When is the right time to start?

woman-509973IIf you’re anything like I used to be when I was overweight, you might dream of being thin, being able to wear clothes that not only show off your figure, but just be able to wear something revealing, and not worry that you look hideous! Yes, we can be our own worst enemy with a negative self image, but dreaming can actually be really helpful as it reminds us of our goals. So, when is the start of this new you…?

You are overweight, as defined in the guidelines set out by the government, and you know you are putting your health at risk and need to implement good healthy sustainable habits, but something is holding you back… Is it fear of failure, or is it not thinking you’re worth it? After all change is new. Yes it can be exciting and challenging, and hugely rewarding when you get results, but it’s out there in the realm of the unknown. It can feel scary. How do you know it’ll actually work?

Don’t believe me, but please believe a lovely client of mine who agreed to let me share a remark she made recently to a close friend. She turned to them and said, ‘actually I don’t feel like I’m on a diet, as I don’t feel I’m depriving myself’. That was the week that she arrived for her regular appointment, and warned me she wouldn’t have lost any weight that week. She lost 1.6lbs!

That’s simply because when you work on a results driven programme, you are not on a diet, you are changing your habits for life, in the average time period it takes to develop a new behaviour.

So when is the best time to start your programme?

Now. You are living your life right now in this moment. Your life is not on hold until you reach the perfect weight, get the perfect job, have the baby, make enough money, pay off the mortgage or even get the dream house. Every day is meaningful, and now is the time to be with yourself. You are living your very best now, and once you realise that, you will learn that now is the time to be healthy for YOU.

Weight loss goal setting

Many of us are unhappy with our weight. We may be within the healthy weight range, but feel as if we are lacking energy, or our clothes don’t fit us. We don’t believe we look or feel our best. It’s all very well ignoring the mirrors or reflections, but if you want a change, there is no time like the present.

If you want something to happen, the reality is that no-one is going to do it for you. Even though I am an expert in Nutrition and provide weight loss programmes with proven results, you still need to have a goal in mind.

For that reason, I make it very clear to my clients that they need to remind themselves of their goals on a daily basis.

It is very easy to fall back into old habits if you don’t. Here are some suggestions if you feel you need inspiration:

  1. Organise a holiday, or a special party in 10 weeks time. You can even buy a dress that is 2 sizes smaller in the knowledge that if you follow the programme you can realistically lose 10-20lbs in 10 weeks.
  2. Book an appointment with a hair and make-up professional who can give you a make over followed by a photo shoot with a friend or professional photographer. We take so many photos on our smart phones, but fail to print them off, as they are often taken with our kids, our partners or our pets! Have a photo taken of you and you alone so that in years to come you can look back and be proud. I’m sure your parents or relatives or loved ones would be really grateful to have a new memento for their sitting room or mantel piece!
  3. Make a bet with a good supportive friend. Commit to saying you are going to do the programme and you will follow it through. There are companies that will keep monies in a holding account that cannot be touched for a period of time. If you lose the weight you can treat yourself. If you give up, the money can go to the charity you loathe, or the political party that is in direct opposition to where your values lie. That way you can’t even give up for a good reason!

I hope these pointers will help you realise that change is possible, you just need to take that first step and have a goal in mind. It takes 66 days on average to develop a new habit according to scientific studies. After that period of time the habit becomes automatic. You can learn how to eat healthy nutritious food and you will feel healthier for the rest of your life.

Recipe for Flaxseed Muffins

3 tablespoons ground flaxseeds (grind in the coffee grinder until fluffy)

1 TBS Organic cacao powder or 1 TBS cocoa powder

1 TBS coconut oil (Tiana brand coconut butter is unscented) plus extra for greasing

1 egg (free range organic is recommended for high Omega 3 content)

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 TBS water

1-2 TBS Stevia (Truvia or supermarket own) or Green Unprocessed Stevia and honey

This equals one batch. Double up, depending on your muffin tray. I recommend silicon, not metallic.

Mix together the ground flaxseeds, cocoa powder, baking powder, vanilla essence  in a bowl with a whisk. Add the melted coconut oil. Beat in the egg and add the water until blended. You may add pecans to give your muffins a crunch.

Grease a mini muffin tray (Lakeland do a very good stable one) and pour in mixture.

Put in the oven at a temperature of 180 degrees C for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Test with a wooden skewer, and if it comes out dry, they are ready.

You can replace the cocoa powder with fresh or frozen blueberries. ENJOY!

What you need to do to lose weight for good

Hi and it’s great that you’ve decided to take control of your weight problem. Chances are you’ve tried diets before only for the weight to rebound and you feel disheartened. I understand, because that was me. Yes, I used to be overweight and I wasn’t happy about the situation. That was over 20 years ago, and I’m happy to say I lost 3 stone and have never regained it.

The good news is that there is a solution to your problem. I have devised a variety of packages to suit your needs.

In a very respectable period of time, (10 weeks), you can realistically expect to lose 10-20lbs, and more importantly you will keep it off.

You will need a one to one introductory 90 minute session where we go through your  dietary history and habits. You will be listened to and not judged. This will be followed up with a session where you will be presented with a personalised programme containing meal and menu plans, recommended food shopping lists, goal setting tips, activity recommendations, advice on how to deal with set-backs, and a recommended follow-up programme.

If you feel you can manage following the introductory programme alone, that is fine. However, studies have shown that it takes 66 days on average to develop a new habit or behaviour. And for the best results, having expert support is key. This is structured as a 10 week package.

Follow up sessions are very supportive and include weight and your body size measurements, weekly reviews, together with a nutrition topic for the week such as the importance of protein for effective weight loss, and why processed foods are damaging your health. You will learn of scientific studies that prove why the weight loss methods you are following actually work.
